Atkins investing in their people – Sam Symes

women in business

Sam Symes, HR Operations Advisor has been with Atkins, a member of the SNC-Lavalin Group, for 12 years. Earlier this year she took part in our Women’s Career Development Programme and furthermore took the opportunity to write about her experience and how the programme has given her empowerment both in work and at home.

“I have recently had a fantastic few days attending the Women’s Development Programme and wanted to share my experience with you all, if you’ve been thinking about applying, I would strongly encourage you to do so! I had heard great things from colleagues who have attended the course in the past so when the application window opened last December I was keen to apply, and I’ve not been disappointed!

Lynn, the course facilitator, oozed enthusiasm and had a great passion to equip and support women to progress their careers in a predominately male environment (although I was the only one who was working in HR this wasn’t an issue for). All of the exercises and discussions were really thought provoking and covered things such as personal image or ‘brand’ at work, breaking down gender stereotypes, understanding the importance of reputation, confidence building tips and thinking about ultimate career goals to work towards. I have taken so much away from this programme and feel more empowered and motivated to start implementing everything I have learnt at work, and at home when raising my 5 year old daughter.

It was also a great way to network and meet other females in the business and hear some of the challenges they face frequently.

I cannot recommend this course highly enough; it far exceeded my expectations and has left me even more motivated than before, so….. what are you waiting for?!” – Sam Symes
