The UKESF has partnered with Skills 4 UK to create a new, annual award that will be open to female scholars who are entering their final year of university.

This will be known as The Skills 4 UK Scholar’s Award.

From the academic year 2016/17, qualifying scholars can apply for the Skills 4 UK Scholar’s Award, which will provide the successful applicant with a place on Skills 4 UK’s award-winning Career Development Programme and additional coaching support. The recipient of the award will also be anexpenses-paid guest of the UKESF at the NMI Industry Summit and Gala Dinner.

Career Development Programme

The Career Development Programme was designed to help women further their careers and has already encouraged over 4,000 women to advance professionally during the eight years since its inception. Normally delivered via a pre-course activity and four workshops over a period of three months, the programme reports that 97% of participants have a more proactive approach to career progression upon completion of the sessions, and 88% have higher levels of self-confidence.

Partnership with Skills 4 UK

The Skills 4 UK Award forms the pinnacle of the UKESF package of new initiatives to encourage more young women to take an interest in STEM and ultimately study Electronics, to support them through university and to equip them with work-ready skills. The package includes:

> Ensuring that, as far as possible, our STEM activities with schoolchildren are targeted at groups with at least a 50:50 boy:girl divide

> Changing the focus of the Headstart Summer School and offering a financial award to female participants who go on to study Electronics at a UKESF partner university

Lynn Tomkins, Chair of Skills 4 UK, said: “Working in partnership with the UKESF to support young women to succeed in the electronics sector is something Skills 4 is committed to investing in going forward” Lynn is also a member of the UKESF Steering Board and a facilitator of the annual UKESF Scholar Workshop.
